Types of Tyre Wear: Identification and Causes

Tyres are crucial part of automobile and carry the whole load of the vehicle. Due to direct contact with road/ terrain they undergo general wear due to constant rolling friction. There are tread wear indicator and it is safe to change the tyre after certain limit of wear.

Tyres with a good grip on road assure your safety while driving.

There are certain kind of wear on tyres you should look out for in regular interval. You need not to be a skilled technician as naked eye view of the kind of wear indicates different issues that cause those wear and gives you a proper idea for further step that should be taken to avoid further deterioration of your car health.

Center Wear: The main cause of this kind of wear is over inflation which cause the load to be concentrate around the center rather than equal distribution. If you are thinking that how is that possible if you regularly check the tyres pressure from your nearby by workshop then you are missing one crucial thing. The pressure guage which constantly used by your local shop may be faulty and give slightly incorrect reading causing over inflation.

Side Wear: Both side of wear on the tyre tread is due to under inflation causing tyre load to distributed on both side of the tyre wear more than the center. The cause maybe same as that of center wear.

Feather Wear: Feather wear is not easily detected by naked eye but running hand on tyre tread make you feel like an individual tread worn on one side and sharp on the other. Feathering is generally caused by either excess toe-in or toe-out, which can be adjusted with a proper wheel alignment. Feathering might also be a symptom of taking corners at high speeds.

One Side Wear: One side of wear either outside or inside of tyres tread is due to positive or negetive camber. Worn suspension components are another source of camber wear on tires which may include worn ball joints, worn tie rod ends . Your auto mechanic can diagnose the problem and offer recommendations as to what the correct course of action to take.

Cupping: Cupping wear form on tyre can be examined visually and its feel like scooped out part when you scoop an ice-cream and is generally 3-4″ (inches) in diameter.

Suspension components like shock absorbers, struts, bushings and others wear out . The result can be a tire no longer able to roll smoothly down the road and it bounces slightly. This bouncing creates uneven points of pressure on tires, leading to tire cupping.

Side Wall Wear: in city where there is issue of space many times a driver try to park too close of sidewalk/footpath causing the side wall to wear after a certain time.

Side wall wear can be due to other causes which can be identified by a skilled technician/mechanic.

Tyre wear due to misalignment of wheel is what you should be more concerned with and immidiately need attention of the owner. You must take your car to the service center or workshop as soon you feel bumping ride uneven noise, steering problem etc.
